- Description
- The structure of a segmental joint with a load-transferring gasket is complicated and exhibits piecewise and nonlinear deformation characteristics under loads. Joint stiffness largely depends on the properties of the concrete and load-transferring gasket, which are the main components of the joint. A reasonable consideration of their influence is one way to predict the failure process of the segmental joint. Taking the segmental joint with a load-transferring gasket in Guangzhou Metro as an example, an analytical solution for its failure process is proposed based on several basic hypotheses. The uneven stress distribution of the load-transferring gasket, the partial opening of the joint and the contact of concrete at external corner of segment are all considered. On the basis of the mechanical equilibrium conditions and the displacement compatibility, equation sets are established in each stage at first, including a total cross-section of joint under compression, joint opening, the contacting of concrete at external corners of segments and the crushing of concrete. Next, the equations are solved using Mathematica. Finally, a three-dimensional finite element simulation and three experimental results are compared with the analytical solution. The comparison demonstrates that the description and prediction of the deformation characteristics of the segmental joint failure process under heavy loads are relatively successful when using the analytical method proposed in this study.
